How much does cat insurance cost? Real prices in Spain

Pet insurance for a cat in Spain can cost 30 € a year or 30 € a month, and both figures are true: it depends on what you buy. Here are the prices the insurers themselves publish on their websites, checked on 18 October 2026, sorted by type of cover, plus the part of the price that is not in the advert: what you still pay when the bill arrives. This article covers the Spanish market only; if you live elsewhere, insurers, prices and rules will be different.

The short answer

There are three tiers. A policy that only covers third-party liability (damage your cat causes to others) costs between 30 and 70 € a year in Spain. Accident cover, which pays the vet if the cat falls, swallows something or is hit by a car, is around 65 or 70 € a year. And proper health cover, which also covers illness, runs from about 12 to about 30 € a month for a young, healthy cat. Every figure in this article is a "from" price published by the companies on their official websites, checked on 18 October 2026. The final price comes from a quote with your cat's details, and it changes every year. In Spain no insurance is compulsory for a cat: the compulsory liability cover under Law 7/2023 applies only to dogs.

Third-party liability only: 30 to 70 € a year

It is the cheapest because it is the least used: a cat very rarely causes damage to third parties. Mapfre advertises it from 30 € a year, with a sum insured of 60,000 to 300,000 €. Línea Directa sells its Esencial option at 39.90 € a year, with 300,000 € of liability cover, no excess and an online vet included. SegurCaixa Adeslas has a basic option at 5.85 € a month (about 70 € a year) with 200,000 € of liability cover, up to 1,000 € for death by accident and 800 € for theft, with no age limit and no waiting period. Before paying for this, check your home insurance: many Spanish policies already include it. Mutua Madrileña, for example, explains that its main-residence policies with contents insured cover damage caused by the animals living in the home, cats included, at no extra cost.

Accident cover: about 65 or 70 € a year

The next tier pays the vet when there is an accident. Mapfre sells its Veterinario de Accidentes from 64 € a year, with up to 1,000 € of costs per accident, and says explicitly that falls from windows, trauma and swallowed foreign bodies are covered from day one. Línea Directa's Completo option costs 69.90 € a year and pays up to 1,000 € in vet fees per accident or road accident, up to 1,000 € if the cat dies in an accident and 100 € towards euthanasia, burial or cremation; it can be taken out for cats between three months and nine years old. It is useful cover for a cat with outdoor access or balconies, but it has a clear limit: it pays for no illness at all. And the most typical feline emergency, urinary blockage in males, is an illness.

Reimbursement health cover: 12 to 30 € a month

This is the policy that covers accidents and illness at the vet of your choice: you pay the bill and get a percentage back. Petolo publishes three plans for cats: Confort at 11.90 € a month, Premium at 19.90 and Premium Plus at 29.90, with annual limits of 2,500, 4,000 and 5,000 €. Petplan advertises its health cover for cats in Spain from 16 € a month, with a limit of 3,100 € a year. Barkibu says "from about 20 € a month", with the prevention plan included, and Musky also starts at 20 € a month. Mapfre sells its Veterinario de Accidentes y Enfermedad from 350 € a year, about 29 € a month. Santévet does not publish a price on the product page; in an article on its website, updated in March 2025, it puts its prices at 10 to 30 € a month. Be careful: comparing only the monthly premium is pointless, because each one pays back a different percentage with a different limit.

Clinic network: a single price

The other model of health cover does not pay you money back: it gives you access to a network of clinics where you pay less or nothing. SegurCaixa Adeslas sells its full option at 24.74 € a month, the same price for any age or breed, for cats up to nine years old. It includes free consultations and visits at more than 500 partner clinics, the rabies vaccine at no cost (except official fees), reduced prices on other services and 24-hour emergencies if you phone ahead. It adds up to 1,000 € for death from illness, with a six-month waiting period on that benefit. Mapfre combines both models: more than 350 partner clinics or 80 % reimbursement at your own vet. Before choosing a clinic network, check two things: that there is a cat-friendly clinic near home, and how much surgery costs there at the reduced rate, because you still pay that part.

What the price depends on

Above all, the cat's age when you take out the policy: the younger, the cheaper, and beyond a certain age you cannot take one out at all. Then breed, because insurers know which breeds have more inherited diseases; Petplan explains on its website that it sets the price using breed, age and the area where you live. What you buy matters too: the percentage paid back, the annual limit, the excess and whether prevention is included. The exception is single-price policies, such as the two SegurCaixa Adeslas options, which charge the same for any cat. What should not decide the price is size: a Maine Coon and an ordinary moggy are operated on for a blockage in the same theatre.

Today's premium is not the one in ten years

A cat often lives fifteen years or more, and almost all premiums rise with age. So the useful question is not how much it costs this year, but how much it will cost when the cat is ten and whether they will keep renewing it. The maximum ages for taking out cover for a cat, according to each company's website, vary widely: under 7 at Petplan; up to 9 at Mapfre, Petolo, the full SegurCaixa Adeslas option and Línea Directa's Completo; under 10 at Santévet; up to 10 at Musky and under 11 at Barkibu. Once covered, Mapfre talks about lifelong renewal, Barkibu, Santévet and Petolo about lifetime cover, and Petplan about a policy that stays in force subject to its renewal policy. Ask in writing how the premium rises over the years.

What you still pay

Imagine a 1,500 € bill for a urinary blockage, within the annual limit. With a policy that reimburses 80 %, such as Barkibu or Musky, you get 1,200 € back and pay 300. With Petplan, which pays 100 % with a 45 € co-payment per condition, you pay 45. With Santévet's Light option, which pays back 50 % and has a 20 € annual excess, you pay over 750. With Petolo's Confort plan, which pays back 60 % if you consulted its online vet first and 40 % if not, you pay between 600 and 900. In other words: the 12 € a month policy and the 30 € one do not buy the same thing. The honest sum is the annual premium plus what you would pay yourself on a big bill.

The annual limit, the other half of the price

This is the maximum they pay out in a year, and with cats it matters because big bills do happen: several days in hospital, gut surgery for a swallowed thread or a fall from a balcony can top 2,000 €. Published limits range from 500 to 5,000 €. Mapfre offers 500, 1,000 or 2,000 € a year on its health cover; Santalucía, according to its product guide, 1,000 € a year on the optional illness benefit; Barkibu and Musky, 3,000 €; Petplan, 3,100 €; Petolo, 2,500 to 5,000 € depending on the plan; and Santévet, 2,000 to 5,000 €. A low limit makes the premium cheaper, but if it runs out in March, you pay for the rest of the year.

Insurance or savings pot: the lifetime sum

A 20 € a month policy is 240 € a year and about 3,600 € over fifteen years, not counting age-related increases. The alternative is to put that same amount aside every month in an account for the cat: it has no exclusions, no waiting periods, no age limit and, if you do not use it, it is still yours. Its weak point is the beginning: if the emergency comes in the first year, there will only be 240 € saved. Insurance wins when the big bill comes early or when several come; the savings pot wins with a healthy cat that reaches old age without major scares, and when what turns up is an illness the policy excludes. Many people combine a cheap accident policy or a health policy with a mid-range limit and a small savings pot for the rest. Our insurance tool lets you run this sum with your cat's age and breed.

How to get comparable quotes

Ask for at least three with the same details about the cat: date of birth, breed, sex, whether neutered and your postcode. For each, note in a table the annual premium, the reimbursement percentage, the excess or co-payment, the annual limit, the waiting periods, the maximum joining age and whether it covers hereditary, congenital and chronic conditions. Ask for the product information sheet and the general terms and conditions before you sign, not after. And note the date: all the figures in this article were checked on the official websites on 18 October 2026, and insurers change them often. If you see a difference, go by the company's website, not this text.

What matters

In Spain, liability only: 30–70 € a year. Accident cover: about 65–70 € a year, without illness. Full health cover: 12 to 30 € a month for a young cat, according to the insurers' official websites (October 2026). Also compare the percentage paid back, the excess, the annual limit and the maximum joining age, not just the premium.
