What it is like

In 1987 a curly-coated female kitten, Miss DePesto, was born at a Montana shelter and ended up with the Persian breeder Jeri Newman. She bred her to a black Persian and half the litter came out curly: it was a dominant gene, different from the Devon's and the Cornish's. Persians, Exotics, British and American Shorthairs were used afterwards, hence its sturdy body and rounded face. It is a calm, patient and very affectionate cat, a good companion for children and other animals, without the intensity of the athletic rex breeds. It is not hypoallergenic: it has all its coat layers and sheds like any cat.

Care

Contrary to appearances, a curly coat should not be brushed thoroughly: the curl comes undone and frizzes. A wide-toothed comb once or twice a week is better, plus the odd bath, leaving it to air-dry. The longhair forms knots under the legs and behind the ears. The curl varies, and a good bath brings it out. Regular cleaning of ears and eyes.

Health

It inherits risks from its outcross breeds: polycystic kidney disease (PKD, DNA test available, from the Persian), HCM and, if the face is very flat, breathing problems and watery eyes. Ask for the parents' PKD test and echocardiogram. Because of its dense coat, ear infections and wax build-up are more frequent than in other breeds.

Fun facts

Miss DePesto, the founder, came from a Montana shelter.

Kittens are born curly, lose some of the curl at around six months and regain it at around eight to ten.

As the gene is dominant, curly and straight-coated kittens come out in the same litter.

Kittens that inherit the gene from both parents usually have a more pronounced curl.

Frequently asked questions

How big does a Selkirk Rex get?

An adult Selkirk Rex usually weighs 3–7 kg (7–15 lb) and stands about 25–30 cm (10–12 in) at the shoulder, which makes it a large cat.

How long does a Selkirk Rex live?

Its usual life expectancy is 12–15 years. Living indoors, being neutered and having regular vet check-ups make the biggest difference.

Is the Selkirk Rex hypoallergenic?

No. It produces the usual cat allergens. If someone at home is allergic, spend time with the breed before deciding and talk to an allergist.

Is the Selkirk Rex good with children?

Usually yes: it tends to be patient and sociable with children. As with any cat, teach children to let it walk away when it has had enough.

How much play does a Selkirk Rex need?

As a guide, 20 min of play a day. Its activity score is 3 out of 5: short daily play sessions with a wand toy work better than one long one.
