What it is like

The biologist Karen Sausman, of Kingsmark cattery in California, began crossing Bengals with Oriental Shorthairs in 1994. She wanted a cat that looked like the African serval but without using recent wild blood: the Bengals she used were already many generations away from their ancestor, the Asian leopard cat. The result is a spotted cat with very long legs, a long neck that runs into the head without narrowing and enormous, upright ears with rounded tips. TICA registers it and the breed is still being developed; outside the United States it is very rare. In character it is active, self-assured and quite talkative, and usually forms a strong bond with its people.

Care

Easy coat: a mitt once a week. What it asks for is activity: tall, stable scratching posts, shelves to climb, daily hunting play with a wand toy and puzzle feeders. When bored, it invents its own games. It learns to walk on a harness and respond to a clicker. It is not the best choice if you are out for many hours and there is no other cat to play with.

Health

It is considered a generally healthy cat; urinary crystals have been described. Because of its founding breeds, ask about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and progressive retinal atrophy, which have tests in the Bengal and the Oriental. Ask for the parents' test results and an annual check-up.

General information about tendencies in the breed, not a diagnosis. Any symptom should be checked by your vet.

Fun facts

It is named after the Serengeti plain in Tanzania, home of the serval it aims to resemble.

Unlike the Savannah, it has no recent serval blood: the resemblance is purely down to selection.

Males can weigh up to 7 kg (15 lb), while females usually stay between 4 and 5 kg (9–11 lb).

Its enormous ears, rounded at the tips, are its most sought-after feature.

Frequently asked questions

How big does a Serengeti get?

An adult Serengeti usually weighs 4–7 kg (9–15 lb) and stands about 28–35 cm (11–14 in) at the shoulder, which makes it a large cat.

How long does a Serengeti live?

Its usual life expectancy is 12–15 years. Living indoors, being neutered and having regular vet check-ups make the biggest difference.

Is the Serengeti hypoallergenic?

No. It produces the usual cat allergens. If someone at home is allergic, spend time with the breed before deciding and talk to an allergist.

Is the Serengeti good with children?

Usually yes: it tends to be patient and sociable with children. As with any cat, teach children to let it walk away when it has had enough.

How much play does a Serengeti need?

As a guide, 45 min of play a day. Its activity score is 5 out of 5: short daily play sessions with a wand toy work better than one long one.
