What it is like

In 1966 a hairless kitten called Prune was born in Toronto, but today's breed comes mainly from hairless cats that turned up in Minnesota and Toronto in the 1970s. The hairlessness is caused by a recessive mutation of the KRT71 gene, the same gene that gives the Devon Rex its curl. It is an outgoing, very affectionate cat that sticks close to people: it looks for laps, gets into bed and greets visitors. It does not shed hair, but it is not a “no-maintenance” or allergy-free cat either: Fel d 1 is in saliva and skin, and many allergy sufferers react just the same. What it does do is leave grease wherever it lies down.

Care

Its skin builds up oil and dirt that no coat absorbs: it needs a bath every one or two weeks with a mild cat shampoo, plus cleaning of the ears (lots of wax), skin folds and between the toes. It gets cold easily: keep the house at a comfortable temperature and provide blankets and enclosed beds. It burns in the sun, even through a window. It eats more than a coated cat to keep warm. It should never go outside unsupervised.

Health

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), very common: regular echocardiograms of breeding cats (an associated genetic variant has been described, but scanning remains key). Hereditary myopathy or congenital myasthenic syndrome (COLQ), with a DNA test. Dermatitis, urticaria pigmentosa, sunburn, wax-related ear infections and dental problems.

General information about tendencies in the breed, not a diagnosis. Any symptom should be checked by your vet.

Health problems to watch for

These are described more often in this breed. It does not mean a Sphynx will have them, nor that a moggy is free of them: they are worth knowing about and discussing with your vet.

Fun facts

Mr. Bigglesworth, Dr Evil's cat in Austin Powers, was a Sphynx called Ted Nude-gent.

Its skin shows the pattern its coat would have: there are tabby, tortoiseshell and bicolour Sphynx.

It feels warm to the touch because it has no hair to insulate it, not because it runs hotter than other cats.

The wrinkles are more pronounced in kittens and on the head and shoulders of adults.

Frequently asked questions

How big does a Sphynx get?

An adult Sphynx usually weighs 3–5.5 kg (7–12 lb) and stands about 20–25 cm (8–10 in) at the shoulder, which makes it a medium cat.

How long does a Sphynx live?

Its usual life expectancy is 12–15 years. Living indoors, being neutered and having regular vet check-ups make the biggest difference.

Is the Sphynx hypoallergenic?

It is often described as hypoallergenic, but no cat is free of the main cat allergen (Fel d 1). Some people with mild allergies react less to it; spend time with the breed before deciding.

Is the Sphynx good with children?

Usually yes: it tends to be patient and sociable with children. As with any cat, teach children to let it walk away when it has had enough.

How much play does a Sphynx need?

As a guide, 30 min of play a day. Its activity score is 4 out of 5: short daily play sessions with a wand toy work better than one long one.
