Causes
A recessive mutation in the PKLR gene: the cat becomes ill if it inherits it from both parents.
How it is diagnosed
Genetic testing and blood tests during episodes.
Treatment
Supportive care during crises, sometimes a transfusion; in severe cases, removal of the spleen has been used.
No doses, on purpose: any medicine must be prescribed by your vet for your cat.
Prognosis
Variable: many cats lead an almost normal life.
Prevention
Genetic testing of breeding cats.
Breeds at higher risk
It is described more often in these breeds. That does not mean all of their cats will have it, nor that a moggy is free of it.
